Wedding Cake Tips

As with the caterer, the best way to find your wedding cake baker is references and taste tests!  Your choices for type of cake are almost endless, from traditional white cake to a different flavor in every layer, to a cupcake tower, and on and on.  A groom's cake is another tradition some couples choose.  For your cake, just be sure to pick something you and your guests will like.  Both taste and appearance are important, so check references on both.

Flavors

The flavor of your wedding cake is a personal choice.  We have just a few pieces of advice.  If your mother-in-law is severely allergic to almonds (as one of ours is!) make sure the baker is not using almondangel wedding cake topper from Antonia Rose Printing oil; many use it to enhance vanilla flavor.  Second, if you are going to have different flavors, make sure you have enough cake that your guests can have a choice of flavor; otherwise the effect is lost on them and you have spent the extra money for nothing.

Decorating

Your wedding cake can be decorated with icing in all colors and textures and any number of other items.  In addition to the icing color and style, you need to decide what to adorn the cake with, if anything.  A traditional bride and groom made of porcelain is a popular choice, as are various glass and porcelain motifs.  There are toppers to match a theme wedding, such as beach or western.  Fresh flowers are another popular way to decorate cakes.  You will find a wide selection of wedding cake toppers and ideas at Antonia Rose Printing and Little Bridal Shop, and your baker may have some as well.

The hottest modern wedding cake topper right now is a monogram or initial cake topper, showcasing your new last name.  Some couples choose to use the initials of their first names with "&" connecting them as well.  You can find monogram cake toppers in stainless steel, acrylic and brushed aluminum, at varying price points.

Logistics

In addition to ensuring your baker will complete the cake for your wedding day, you need to determine who will deliver it to the reception site, who will set it up, if necessary, who will decorate it (if flowers are used, for example), and then who will cut it at the site.  Be clear who is responsible for each step, as it can vary between the baker, caterer and reception site.

If you have purchased a wedding cake serving set, make sure it gets to the reception site personnel who will be cutting the cake.  If you are looking at purchasing one, make sure it is sturdy enough; we have heard quite a few stories of the decorative knife breaking during the cake cutting!  If you have not bought one, just double-check that the cake servers will have what they need.  (Many brides choose to purchase a cake serving set, often engraved with their names and wedding dates, to memorialize the occasion and for future use at formal dinners they have.  A wide variety of styles are available at our websites, Antonia Rose Printing and www.LittleBridalShop.com.

Don't forget to be clear about whether or not you will be sending wedding cake home with guests, another tradition for some couples.  There are small cake boxes available for this, which can be personalized or not.  Most couples choose an extra sheet cake or two for this purpose. Both Antonia Rose Printing and Little Bridal Shop sell plain and personalized boxes of various sizes appropriate for cake pieces.

Finally, decide if you will use cloth napkins, plain paper napkins or printed wedding napkins with your cake service.  Many brides use the small "beverage" or "cocktail" napkins printed with a motif or monogram and their names and wedding date for their cake service, in addition to or instead of using them for their beverage service.  Larger "luncheon" napkins are also available to use with dinner.  They are available in a wide variety of paper and ink colors to coordinate with your wedding.

Tradition

Traditionally the bride and groom put some of their wedding cake, often the top layer, in the freezer, to have a bit on each anniversary.  Make sure your serving staff know of your plans, so they don't cut and serve the part you want! Designate someone to take the cake home for you; you will be busy with other things!

Keeping Your Cake Top

If your cake topper is not edible or perishable, think about how you want to save it.  There are glass domes available for this purpose (check Antonia Rose Printing's wedding accessories area), which can make a nice display object of your cake top.
