Florist Tips
Flowers
are often a big part of wedding decor and they can be a way to make a big
impact on the atmosphere of your ceremony and reception locations. If
you have a florist you regularly use, ask them first about doing weddings.
Otherwise check around town and ask friends and family for references.
References and pictures of the florists' wedding work are the best way to
decide if they are right for you. The style of flowers you like is a
very personal choice, and you want to work with a wedding florist who understands
your taste. Make sure you are talking to the person who will be in
charge of the flowers for YOUR wedding, not to a store manager or someone
else.
Your florist will have many suggestions and ideas for using
flowers in your wedding. We have just a few tips, based on our
experience and that of our customers.
- If you don't want to throw your beautiful bouquet, get
a
separate "toss bouquet" for that ritual.
- GET EXTRA corsages and boutonnieres. Count and
recount who needs them, and still order a few extras. One of us was
at a wedding where an honored godparent who moved rather slowly was not
given a corsage as they had run out...the relatives of this traditional
Chinese family were mortified. Don't let this happen to you!
The mothers and grandmothers generally get corsages and the fathers and
groomsmen/ushers boutonnieres. In many families the godparents also
get them, as do the personal attendants, "hosts" and others who help
out.
- Your bouquet and/or those of your bridesmaids can serve as decor at the reception.
Get a
vase or holder for it and put it on the head table, or put it at the cake
table.
- A tiny vase with just one small bloom can be a lovely
favor/table decoration. A medium size vase with a few flowers is a
nice table centerpiece as well.
- Determine what time the flowers need to be delivered
and who will deliver them; get this in writing from the florist.
- A tussie-mussie vase is a nice way to display the
bouquets during the reception, and can be
a gift to the bridesmaids
afterwards (or a remembrance for the bride).
- The flower girl can carry flowers or a
basket
of rose petals which she scatters on the aisle. The
basket can be
white satin, wicker, or any style that works with your wedding.
- Your flower choices are endless; have fun picking what
YOU love!
To the left is a tussie mussie flower holder; one piece holds
the
bouquet
when it is held and another displays it on a table, like a vase. To
the right is a photo showing plastic clamp bouquet holders, which can be used
to display your bouquets on tables at your reception.
These are both ways of stretching your flower budget
and showing off your ceremony bouquets at the
reception.
